Sustainable Ecosystems -
Students have been engaged in learning about Nutrient Cycles and Energy Flow. The planets sustainability depends on the various cycles on earth and their ability to cycle nutrients over and over again. The water, carbon, nitrogen and phosphate cycles were discussed in detail. Populations and Species Interactions were an important topic because it shows how all organisms interact with one another to help create a sustainable environment. Lastly, biodiversity was discussed and how vital it is to help maintain the health of the planet.

Atoms, Elements and Compounds -
For the first time students learn about chemistry and all its beautiful elements. All of the elements and periodic trends associated with the periodic table made this unit interesting yet complicating. Chemistry is considered the mathematics of science and its allowed students to think in a way about science that they have never thought about it before. It enabled students to to learn about various chemicals and their ability to react by applying the knowledge they learnt in class through experiments. The world of chemistry gave the students a perspective on how crucial chemical reactions are to society.

The Characteristics of Electricity
Zap! Did you feel that? That was electricity flowing from the door knob to your hand; also known as charge by contact. One of the three ways (charge by induction and friction) students will learn of how electrons can pass from one surface to another. Students will further their understanding of how electricity flows by exploring series and parallel circuits. Renewable energy sources and the different types of batteries in the world that allow electricity to be harnessed were a focus during this unit.

The Study of the Universe
Boldly go where no person has gone before! The students explore the stars, planets, galaxies and see how vast the universe is. In this unit students assumed the teacher role and taught the students about their assigned sections. The ability to learn and teach a concept ensures true understanding and in this unit students did not disappoint. This independent study unit took us the exam preparations.

Students had the opportunity to investigate some of the animals and environments that make up the aquatic ecosystems on planet earth. The aquarium gets them thinking about the roles these animals play in their natural habitat, the role of the aquarium and the role we all play as stewards of our environment.
